Voices in My Head

Hello everyone!

I don't want to scare anyone. I'm not hearing actual voices in my head. What I want to convey is that we all have these ideas we rehearse in our minds, these tapes we play in our heads. Whether they are our own words or the words someone else said to us, we find ourselves playing them.

Yesterday was such a day for me. I heard my late husband Jeff's voice in my head, althought I don't very often. It was his other self. His mean, abusive self telling me I talked too much and that he didn't like me and he wanted me to be quiet (he didn't use those words exactly but you get the picture). Those echoing words brought tears to my eyes.

When those tapes play in my head and there are a couple from my marriage that do, I have to stop them in their tracks. If I do not stop them, I will start believing them. And that would only bring depression and despair into my heart and mind.

How do I stop those tapes from playing you may ask? I use God's Word - for His Word tells me everything that is good about me and it helps me combat those type of negative, destructive thoughts.

My go-to verse is 2 Corinthians 10:5;

"We are destroying sophisticated arguments and every exalted and proud thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought and purpose captive to the obedience of Christ..."

This can include our thoughts (arguments and things that exalt themselves above the knowledge of God). It doesn't matter if those thoughts are ours or words from others or from our past. They don't have to control us! Those tapes from my past, his destructive words, will not control me!

Your tapes, those words, no matter how destructive don't have to control you either. They don't have to set the course for you life! Take control back with God's Word and watch your perspective change. You will actually start to like yourself and others!

Taking all thoughts captive,

Elizabeth
