My Letter to President Trump

Writer's picture: Elizabeth R BillingsleyElizabeth R Billingsley

Hello all! In the interest of transparency, I would like to to share the letter I wrote to President Trump. I spent about two months writing this and praying. I called him to justice, compassion, and righteousness. I sent this letter this past Tuesday, the day after the Inauguration. The outcome is in God's hands now. President Trump will be responsible for his choices. I continue to pray and will stand, speak, and write as I need to over the next 4 years.

Do not be afraid. I am not afraid.

***************************************************************************************

Dear President Trump,

Grace and peace be to you and yours in the name of Jesus Christ!

I write again to you as a Christ follower concerned for your heart as well as concerned for the heart and well-being of our nation. I do not pretend to know what it is like to the President. I know there are many decisions you must make and priorities to balance for the entire nation. It is also not lost on me that many have been less than graceful to you from the start. I want to ask you as a fellow believer to not let your focus be on them. They do not know your heart, only Jesus does. Social media wars (nor any sparring with the press) can’t accomplish anything good for this nation, and I choose to believe you are trying to do good. They distract you from leading, don't let them. The only One who defines you is Jesus Christ as a believer. He bled and died for you to set you free. His opinion is the only one that counts. Not even the opinion of either party or your Cabinet members count. This is a hard but trustworthy saying.

In doing good for our nation, we must remain a light to this world. This does not mean we are to be the world police. We cannot, however, withdraw from the world stage entirely. As I asked you in 2019, I would encourage you again to reconsider some of your foreign policy as well as immigration policies. Please look at them from a Biblical perspective. Believers are charged with the care of the poor and the alien in Leviticus and Deuteronomy. People were also charged with the care of the Earth in the Garden of Eden, and we must still care for our Earth and its creatures today. Please do not lightly abandon climate change issues and Earth care. I encourage you to continue to highlight the religious freedom of all Americans as you did in your first term. Where women are concerned, you have said you would protect us whether we wanted it or not. I would encourage and admonish you to be a man with the heart of Christ toward women – a man of humility, strength, grace, peace, honor, respect, and protection; and to address men promptly and aggressively who view women as less than or inferior.

The Word of God should come before any party line or lobbyist needs. I understand you read the scriptures daily and have said you love the Bible. Let Scripture be the standard in your life and leadership that supersedes all other things. I offer you scripture to think on in the coming, challenging days regarding our stewardship of the planet and for the immigrant, the alien, and the nation’s poor:

Genesis 2:15 and 20; The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it…He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.  So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

Leviticus 19:34; The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.

Deuteronomy 10:18; "He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing."

Deuteronomy 15:11; "There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore, I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land."

I would again encourage you to consider your words both on social media and publicly. Many of your critics could stand to do the same too. Our words tell others what is in our hearts. Again, I offer you scripture to consider in the days ahead:

James 3:2-18;  "We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to control his whole body. When we put bits into the mouths of the horses to make them obey us, we can guide the whole animal. Consider ships as well. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot is inclined. In the same way, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it boasts of great things. Consider how small a spark sets a great forest ablaze. The tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness among the parts of the body. It pollutes the whole person, sets the course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With the tongue we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, this should not be! Can both fresh water and saltwater flow from the same spring? My brothers, can a fig tree grow olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good conduct, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap the fruit of righteousness."

Both the spoken and written words are powerful. They have both the power to bring death and the power to bring life. Let your words, as our nation's leader, bring only life and peace. I believe when we speak peace and life to any situation, they come.  You have spoken to unity on several occasions. I encourage you to continue to speak such words and that your actions also match those words.

You have said, “Peace through strength!” I would encourage you to choose Peace through Wisdom and Compassion. Let compassion, self-control, and wisdom guide your every step over the next 4 years. I know you are capable of being such a leader.

Galatians 5:22-23; But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Most importantly, I want you to know I pray for you because I know your job is not easy. I ask you to seek His face daily and let Him guide you in your decision-making. He can help you make decisions that are good for all people, alien and resident alike, men, women, and children. Above all else guard your heart, for out of it flow the issues of life and leadership (Proverbs 4:23).  Be aware of your council and those who offer you advice. Be as aware of their motives as you are of your own. Many are the little foxes who come to spoil the vine (Song of Solomon 2:15a).

I would like to thank you for your time in reading my letter. Grace and peace be to you and all in your home. Grace and peace be to your staff, cabinet members, federal appointees, and their families.

Sincerely,
